Cross-border medical: don't just watch the sum insured
Even with the same sum insured, the practical experience of getting care can differ greatly. Medical networks, direct-billing services and underwriting terms often have a greater effect on whether cover works when needed.
Looking at cross-border medical cover, many only compare the sum insured. But what really shapes the experience is often what lies beyond it: which countries' and regions' hospitals are covered, whether private hospitals and specified specialties are included, and how critical illness is supported.
Two more points get overlooked: first, whether there is direct billing — the insurer settling with the hospital rather than you paying first and claiming later; second, how underwriting and pre-existing conditions are handled, which decides whether cover truly works when it matters. Only once these are clear does the sum insured mean anything.
This article is protection education, not a product recommendation; specific terms, exclusions and underwriting outcomes follow each insurer's official documents.
